Attention all 8th through 12th Grade Students:  Summer School Registration Begins Monday, April 9.

All 9th through 12th grade students who are interested in taking Summer School classes to make up a grade to meet graduation requirements or to fulfill college entrance requirements must register using our online enrollment system.  The online system will be available starting Monday, April 9.  Summer School registration will continue until April 27 at 5 p.m.

Current 8th through 11th graders also have the opportunity to take a Math Summer Bridge course to help prepare them for the course work that they will be studying in the coming school year.  These courses include Pre-Algebra, Pre-Geometry and Pre-Intermediate Algebra.  These courses will be taken for elective credit and the grade issued will be a Pass/No Credit.  This is an excellent opportunity to get a jump start for next year.

Summer School Registration will begin by completing the application online at www.lbschools.net/summer.  After the application is submitted, the student or parent will receive an immediate on screen confirmation that they have registered.  Two weeks after registering, parents and students will be able to view the courses that counselors have selected for your child to take during summer school.  If you would like to discuss the classes needed, please make an appointment with the counselor before May.  Please note that counselors will select summer school courses based on credit recovery needs, “a-g” completion needs or placement in a Math Bridge course.

Dear 8th Grade Students and Parents/Guardians:

The end of the year is rapidly approaching and there are several special activities planned for our eighth graders as they finish their middle school years. Please note that students must have enough points in order to participate in each of the planned activities.

Eighth Grade Dance

The eighth grade dance will be held on Friday, June 8, 2018, from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Grace First Presbyterian Church located at 3955 North Studebaker Road, Long Beach, CA 90808 (juncture of Los Coyotes Diagonal and Studebaker). The students will be driven to the dance from Tincher by school bus. Students need to be picked up at the church parking lot at 5:00 p.m.

The day of the dance will be uniform-free. The district dress code policy will be enforced. Students need to wear appropriate clothing to school. The dance is only for 8th grade middle school students who attend Tincher Preparatory School.

Eighth Grade Picnic at CSULB

The eighth grade picnic will be held on Wednesday, June 13th from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the California State University Long Beach Student Union. There will be bowling lanes, pool tables, ping-pong tables, and arcade games (students must provide their own money for arcade games) available. Students may bring their own lunch, receive a box lunch from the Tincher Cafeteria, or students may purchase lunch from the food court located in the Student Union. Cake or pastries will be ordered for all students to celebrate their upcoming promotion to high school. Each student will receive a “Tincher Preparatory School Class of 2018” pen and t-shirt.

Eighth Grade Promotion

The eighth grade promotion will be held on Thursday, June 14th.  The ceremony will begin at 9:30 a.m. on the grassy area behind the office. The students may leave with their parents when the graduation ceremony is over. Please remember to pick up student folders/diplomas near the office before leaving.

Yearbooks

Students need to purchase a yearbook if they wish to receive one.

Cost

We will be collecting a $35 donation from each eighth grader to help with the cost of these activities. Donations can be made with cash or check. Checks should be made payable to Tincher. We would like for students to turn in their $35 donation as soon as possible due to the many items that must be paid for in advance. Threat Prevention

Hello, Students and Families.

As we’ve seen in recent weeks, our schools are not immune to the potential threats that so many other schools nationwide have been dealing with.  We appreciate your heightened awareness of this issue, and we continue to encourage everyone in our school communities to report any suspicious information or activity that could impact school safety.

Threats to our schools are not harmless, and they are not funny.  They take valuable resources and time from our school district and the law enforcement agencies who work with us each day to keep our schools safe.  Threats cause anxiety for parents, students and staff, and they can disrupt the important work of teaching and learning.  Students who make threats face consequences that linger long after the threat is made.  We reiterate the Long Beach Police Department’s recent statement about such threats:

“The Long Beach Police Department takes all potential threats of violence very seriously and thoroughly investigates all reported incidents,” Chief Robert Luna said. “Making any kind of threat whether in person or online, is illegal and has serious consequences.”

Those consequences, as we also have seen in recent weeks, can include suspension, expulsion, arrest and potential prosecution under the law.  Students who make threats, even as a “joke,” can quickly find themselves facing the entire range of these consequences.

We urge parents to discuss this matter with their children.  In light of the senseless loss of lives in recent school shootings nationally, it is completely inappropriate and unacceptable to make threats, even as a “joke.”

We have appreciated everyone’s support during this challenging time.  Again, we continue to encourage students, parents and staff to immediately report any information that could impact the safety of others.  With your help, we can continue to provide safe schools and the best possible education for our students.

Sincerely,

Chris

Prevención de amenazas

Hola, estudiantes y familias.

Sinceramente,

Chris

National Walkouts and Demonstrations

Hello, students and families.  The Long Beach Unified School District is aware of rumors of planned student protests and/or walkouts at some schools in response to the tragedy in Parkland, Florida.  It appears that at least three major student-led efforts are underway nationally, including on Wednesday, March 14; Saturday, March 24; and Friday, April 20.

Our top priority is to support the needs of our students while maintaining a safe and orderly learning environment for all. Free political expression and activity is one of the great privileges that we enjoy in this country.  It is a privilege that should be taken seriously and used in a responsible way.  Teachers and administrators here are always glad to see students become interested in any important issues facing our country, and are glad to encourage political participation by students, as long as it is done in a responsible way.

We respect and support the right of our students to advocate for causes that are important to them and welcome the opportunity to work with any student or student group to discuss appropriate and creative ways to do so while at school.

Leaving campus during school hours to participate in political activity is not a safe and responsible way to work for change.  We encourage you to talk to your children about how they may be feeling about this topic, and the importance of expressing themselves in appropriate ways at school. Students attempting to leave campus will not be held at school.  But it’s important to know that disorderly conduct that disrupts school operations is not acceptable, and our usual expectations will remain in effect.

The most responsible way for students to pursue political change is to stay in school during school hours and pursue their political objectives here on campus in an acceptable forum, or wait until after-school hours to participate in political activities off campus.  Opportunities for on-campus expression are being planned at all middle and high school campuses.  In addition, Long Beach will be among the cities holding demonstrations nationwide on Saturday, March 24.  The Long Beach event is planned for 10 a.m. at Bixby Park, located at 130 Cherry Ave. in Long Beach.

Thank you for your continued support.

Christopher J. Steinhauser
Superintendent of Schools

Huelgas y Manifestaciones Nacionales

Hola, estudiantes y familias.

Hello, Tincher Families.

Today during school, students notified us that a classmate had recently made a threat to harm others at the school.  Our students remained safe the entire time today.  The Long Beach Police Department investigated and arrested one of our students.

We thank those who came forward with important information. Please know that we take all threats seriously, and we continue to work closely with our partners in law enforcement to keep our students safe.

Sincerely,

Rosemary Sissons

Principal

Basic Services -- LCAP Highlights

Dear Friends,

Two weeks ago, we began sharing with you some highlights of our Local Control and Accountability Plan, or LCAP.  We began with a publication titled Academic Excellence.  Today we continue our series of highlights with Basic Services – A Foundation for Excellence.

If the title links to the above documents don’t work, you can also find them at lbschools.net under the Local Control Funding section.

In the coming weeks, we will share additional highlights of the LCAP.

Best regards,

Chris

State law requires all public schools to create a School Accountability Report Card (SARC). The purpose of the report card is to provide parents and the community with important information about your child's school, which includes:

  • School Description and Mission
  • School Programs and Instructional Materials
  • Opportunities for Parent Involvement
  • Test Results
  • Safety Plan
  • Facilities

We invite you to view the School Accountability Report Card (SARC) for your child's school.  You can find your school's SARC here.

Results of the 2017-2018 School of Choice Process for current eighth grade students will be sent home via US Mail this week. Results will also be visible in ParentVue beginning Friday, February 16, at 5:00pm.

Please remember, enrollment is not complete until you intend to a pathway that you have been accepted to. Failure to intend (via ParentVue) and certify by the deadline of 11:59pm Friday, February 23, 2018, can result in the loss of that acceptance.

After viewing your results, if you wish to file an appeal, a link to the form, as well as a paper copy will be available on our website. These forms can also be obtained from your Middle School or K8 Office.

We strongly recommend intending to a pathway while the appeals are being reviewed, as there is no guarantee of an appeal being granted.

For this year, the deadline to file an appeal is the close of business on March 16, 2018. Following that, the next opportunity to apply for a transfer will be April 1, 2019, through the High School Office.

If you have any questions, please call the High School Choice Helpline at (562) 997-8306.

The MS/K-8 Choice Office is aware that there is an error in the program that is locking some students out of selecting electives for each of their choices, and that this is preventing them from completing the application.

Our programming team is working on the issue and we will let you know when it is repaired.

The School of Choice application for sixth grade is not decided on a first come, first served basis. Every family that certifies and completes the application by the deadline will be considered on-time.

Thank you for your patience,

Team MS/K-8 Choice

October 2017

This year Tincher PTA is excited to be partnering with a fun, free, and truly easy fundraiser called Shoparoo! As of October 2017, we now have 25 active participants and a little under $50.00 raised so far!   Last year we had 8 active participants and raised $137.00 from September 16’ – September 17’.  With a little under 800 students you can see how the funds can quickly add up.  Our goal is to reach at least 100 participants (we can do it!) to add to our playground equipment fund.  Shoparoo is a great opportunity for us to really make a difference!

Shoparoo is school fundraising made easy the free app turns pictures of your everyday shopping receipts into cash donations and sweepstakes entries for our school! Yep, it’s that simple. No cutting labels, selling door to door, or time-consuming coordinating. All you have to do is shop as you normally do, snap pictures of your receipts with the app, and voila! Just shop, snap, earn!

Get started today:

1. Download the free Shoparoo app from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store

2. Select Tincher Preparatory School from the list and start taking pictures of your receipts with camera on app - shop anywhere, buy anything!

3. You can even select a grade to support and have fun with grade competitions!

There’s no limit to how much money we can raise with Shoparoo - the more supporters, the more we will raise for our school.  Please check out shoparoo.com to learn more about this awesome app!

Thank you for your support!

October 20, 2017

Dear Tincher Families,

Yesterday, as part of the Great California Shakeout, our entire school participated in an extended earthquake drill.  The purpose of the drill was to practice duck, cover and hold, evacuating and accounting for all students and staff, search and rescue, care of students during an emergency and the reunification process.  In addition to our students and staff, several parent volunteers were participants in the drill. I am proud to say that in 27 minutes, we had the buildings evacuated, everyone on campus accounted for and parents reunited with their children.  The drill was orderly and everyone, including the students, did their part to keep our school community safe.  We also learned a few valuable lessons on how to improve our practices.

In addition to Tincher staff, we also had several other LBUSD employees participating in the drill.  Cathy Coy, Emergency Preparedness Program Manager, assisted in the planning and execution of the drill.  Additionally, staff from the District Office of Multimedia Services videotaped the event.  This video will be used for District training and will also be shown on ed.tv, the District’s cable TV channel.  I will let you know when it will air.

Although we hope never to use the skills we practiced yesterday, it is good to know that our school is prepared to handle an emergency and its aftermath.

If you have any questions about emergency preparedness, please contact me.

Sincerely,

Rosemary M. Sissons

Principal

Dear Parents and Students,

The week of October 23rd through the 27th, Tincher Preparatory School is celebrating “Red Ribbon Week 2017.” Red Ribbon week started in 1985 to honor Special Agent Enrique Camarena of the Drug Enforcement Administration, who was killed in the line of duty. The purpose of Red Ribbon Week is to make students aware of the dangers and problems associated with the use of alcohol, tobacco products, illegal drugs and misuse of prescription drugs. The Red Ribbon has become a symbol of our country’s resolve to eliminate the demand for illegal drugs. The Tincher staff and PTA will present a unified and visible commitment at our school toward the creation of a Drug-Free America.

This year’s theme is: “Your Future is Key, so Stay Drug Free”

Monday, October 23, 2017:  “Your Future is Key, so Stay Drug Free.”

Students will sign and stamp their hand print on the Tincher’s Drug Free Banner, provided by PTA, during lunch recess outside PTA room. Students are encouraged to wear a red shirt to school to show their support for a healthy lifestyle.

Tuesday, October 24, 2017: Red Ribbons on fence

Show your drug free by tying a Red Ribbon on the fence (by the bike racks), during lunch recess. Ribbons will be provided by the PTA.

Wednesday, October 25, 2017: Too Smart-ie to start-ie, drugs are for “Dum Dums”

PTA will hand out Dum Dum lollypops and Smarties in classes.

Thursday, October 26, 2017:  Being Drug Free Comes in Cans, I Can, You Can, We Can

Students are encouraged to bring a can of Yams from home and drop it off in the red buckets in the main office hallway. All canned yams will be donated to The Long Beach Basket Brigade.

Friday, October 27, 2017: Go “Natural.” Real stories that inspire!

Student screening of Natural High video, helping youth thrive through powerful stories told by influential role models. Middle school students may view video during lunch in the Auditorium. Elementary students will be encouraged to watch Natural High video in class, provided by PTA.

Classroom Interruptions:

Because we know you value your child’s instructional time in the classroom, we ask your cooperation to avoid classroom interruptions.

Therefore, please help your child be responsible for bringing their homework, projects, books, lunch, money, etc. to school every day.  And please take time, before school each evening or morning, to give your child information on special transportation or child care arrangements and other general messages for the day.

In the event your child forgets a critical item, you may bring it to the office and leave it on a designated table (labeled with your child’s name, grade, and room number).  Because the office staff cannot interrupt the classroom for forgotten items, please talk to your child now about checking the “Forgotten Items” table in the office in the event they forget something during the school year.

In addition, please do not ask the office staff to deliver any non-emergency messages to your child, as this constitutes loss of valuable learning for your child and his/her classmates.

Traffic Safety:

Thank you for helping your child get to school on time and ready to learn.  The valet drop off in the morning is working well.  Thank you Mr. Barakat (Father of Zachary) for volunteering your time.  We highly encourage you to keep backpacks and instruments in the front seat with your child.  Going into the trunk slows down the pace and backs up the line.    Also, please remember to follow all traffic safety rules such crossing at the cross walk and no double parking.  Help us be good neighbors by avoiding 3-point turns in driveways and not beeping/honking for your children after school.

Summer School Registration Begins Monday, April 10th

All 9th through 12th grade students who are interested in taking Summer School classes to make up a grade to meet graduation requirements or to fulfill college entrance requirements must register using our online enrollment system.  The online system will be available starting Monday, April 10.  Summer School registration will continue until May 14 at 5 p.m.

After the application is submitted, the student and parent will receive an email with directions for selecting the classes that you plan to take during the summer.  You should receive this email two to three schooldays after the application is submitted.
